John Lithgow has stirred excitement by hinting at the return of his infamous Dexter character, the sinister Trinity Killer, in the upcoming sequel series Dexter: Resurrection. “I just went back to do a day,” Lithgow remarked to Variety. “They’re reinventing the Michael C. Hall version of Dexter. And it turns out he didn’t die after all. I come back sort of as a phantom, as he gradually comes to life on a hospital bed.”

Lithgow’s character, Arthur Mitchell, was the central antagonist during the intense season 4 of Dexter, originally aired in 2009. By day, Arthur appears as a church deacon, high school teacher, and family man. However, under this facade, he operates as a serial killer, known as the Trinity Killer due to his pattern of three murders. These are rooted in traumatic childhood experiences.

Season 4 reached its dramatic peak when Arthur uncovered Dexter‘s true identity and murdered his wife, Rita. Dexter avenged her by killing Arthur with a hammer in the gripping season finale. Lithgow made a brief return in a 2021 episode of Dexter: New Blood, through a flashback that depicted Rita’s tragic murder.

Resurrection picks up the narrative threads from New Blood. Michael C. Hall will be back as the forensic analyst turned vigilante serial killer, Dexter Morgan. Fans will also see the return of David Zayas as Miami lawman Angel Batista, Jack Alcott as Dexter’s son Harrison, and James Remar as his father Harry. The series will introduce Uma Thurman, Peter Dinklage, Krysten Ritter, and Neil Patrick Harris in starring roles.

Dexter: Resurrection is yet to announce its premiere date. Meanwhile, eager fans can explore our guide to the best upcoming TV shows of 2025 to expand their viewing list.
