Jean Grey is set to make a ‘miraculous return’ that promises to unravel a long-standing X-Men enigma from the ’90s. It has been hinted that the character, previously teased to be revived in May’s Phoenix #11, will actually be Sara Grey, Jean’s sister. Sara’s demise has left numerous questions in the X-mythos that fans have been eager to see resolved. Marvel has also unveiled an intriguing Dark Phoenix-esque cover for Phoenix #12 by Lucas Werneck.
Phoenix #11, crafted by writer Stephanie Phillips and the newly onboarded artist Roi Mercado, will delve into the intrigue surrounding Sara’s 1994 death in X-Men #36. She was murdered, and her family was consumed by the techno-organic Phalanx. Sara Grey’s mysterious end has left fans puzzled for three decades, with hints of unmanifested mutant powers adding another layer of mystery.
This raises the question: Could Sara Grey be an Omega mutant like her sister, drawing the powerful Phoenix Force that is linked to Jean? Answers will emerge in Phoenix #11, which will challenge Jean to her very core, making her reevaluate her identity as the Phoenix. In June’s follow-up, Phoenix #12, Sara will reveal ‘her unbelievable story,’ exposing long-held X-Men secrets.
For X-Men enthusiasts, such unresolved mysteries are an expected part of the narrative, with several key plot threads remaining open over the decades. While many renowned X-Men mysteries have been resolved, Sara Grey’s fate and her potential powers remained unresolved until now.
Phillips remarks, ‘Jean’s story is often defined by resurrection, so it feels deeply personal to ask her to confront the return of someone she lost and never expected to see again.’ This narrative forces Jean to ponder not only the Phoenix’s weight but also the poignant struggle between her responsibilities and her deep-seated desires. Can she manage the cosmic responsibilities with her personal longing to reclaim the past?
