A true ‘eureka’ moment occurs in 33 Immortals when you realize the ‘collect arrows’ button does more than just reload your bow. It damages enemies as the arrows return to you, transforming the game into a lively, real-time crowd management challenge. As enemies are drawn back into the path of your arrows and fall into dust, this Early Access release proves to be very promising.

The ‘Bow of Hope’ isn’t the sole weapon in Thunder Lotus Games‘ latest release; it offers four other weapons, each serving a distinct role. There’s a Tank role equipped with a lengthy sword available in both quick and charged forms, and the ‘Staff of Sloth’ which lets a mage hurl magic projectiles. Additionally, a swift pair of knives known as the ‘daggers of greed’ let you slash through foes up close.

With a release date of March 18, 2025, and availability on PC and Xbox Series X, this game was developed in-house and published by Thunder Lotus Games. During my two-hour session, I spent the first hour learning the game mechanics. Much like Fortnite, you coop with up to 32 players on a public server. For some rooms and bosses, six players are ideal, with a handy map feature showing player locations to join in on the action. Group play shines with the ability to perform spectacular team-up magical attacks, adding to the thrill.

In the second hour, I found five others proficient in gameplay, enabling us to attempt the first of three intended gameplay loops. Entering rooms dubbed Torture Chambers closes them off when six players are inside. Alone, it’s nearly impossible to defeat the enemy waves, but with cooperative effort, the screen floods with enemies, magic, and environmental challenges, reminiscent of the 80s classic Gauntlet, here set against the backdrop of Dante’s Inferno.

Upon completing challenge rooms, players earn two chests containing perks—one requiring a key obtainable through purchase or chance. Perks include health boosts or increased damage to large foes. Afterward, players face a daunting ascension challenge before confronting Lucifer himself. The boss battles are heightened by organ music and cinematic perspectives, intensifying the thrill as you attack his heart.

The hand-drawn artwork, lush and dynamic, shines on the Xbox Series X, though the movement feels somewhat lackluster. Attack sequences lack punch, and arrows’ recall interrupts game fluidity. The game might feel repetitive after 90 minutes. However, various perks, quests, and costume features promise diversity.

The initial hours have piqued my interest, and mastering the gameplay loop further beckons me towards daring strategies against Lucifer. Yet, fair warning: the game shines only when fellow players grasp its mechanics; otherwise, you risk being overwhelmed. The potential for increased enjoyment remains, with evolving character levels and growing player expertise. Game Pass opens access later today for Xbox/PC enthusiasts, making 33 Immortals a standout Early Access endeavor.
