Elsie Bennett and Kaja Chan, who skillfully bring to life the dual protagonists Zoe and Mio in Split Fiction, faced a memorable challenge during their first audition. They nearly missed their chance because they were unaware they needed to flip the script to read the second part of the scene, which led to a comical moment.
“It was a scene in a lift,” Bennett recalled in an interview on Hazelight’s YouTube channel. “We went in and we did the scene, and then, you know at the end someone says cut? No one was saying cut,” Bennett explained with a laugh.
Chan added, “No, we were just stood there, sweating.” Their recount of standing awkwardly, waiting for a cue that never came, painted a vivid picture. “We had done the last line and it was like [extended pause], lift acting, like a lot of lift acting. Really waiting, like ‘they are really dragging out this cut,’ and then they were like, ‘OK, cut, did you not have the rest of the scene?’ and neither of us had realized that on the other side [of the script] there was like another half of a scene.”
This realization led to laughter between them, which Chan believes actually helped their audition. “We lost it, but I think that worked in our favor, you know?” he said. Bennett chimed in, “We very quickly realized that we were of the same ilk.” Their shared misstep ended up bonding them and ultimately winning them the roles.
Reflecting on the experience, the thought of these two talented actors standing in a make-believe elevator, nervously sweating while the crew shared their confusion, is both sympathetic and amusing. It’s a situation many can relate to, but it’s easier to laugh about it now, especially since both Bennett and Chan successfully landed the parts. This adds a charming layer to their success story.
The buzz around Split Fiction continues to grow as the game is set to transition to the big screen. Reports indicate that “top Hollywood studios” are engaged in a bidding war over this co-op phenomenon, promising a bright future for the actors and the story they helped bring to life.
