The acclaimed Russo Brothers recently unveiled how Kevin Feige initiated the idea of Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom adding an intriguing twist to the Marvel universe. Yet, their enthusiasm was withheld until the perfect narrative unfolded.

“That suggestion came from Kevin,” Joe Russo shared with Omelette. “Interestingly, that conversation was broached earlier on. Robert eagerly urged us to take it on, but we expressed, ‘No’ … simply because a compelling story was absent,” he disclosed.

After some reluctance, inspiration struck from Steve McFeely, a key collaborator in previous projects like Avengers: Endgame. He proposed an intriguing concept, leading the Russos to acknowledge, “That’s the story. It must be unfolded. It’s an enthralling tale.”

Though details about Avengers: Doomsday remain scarce, Robert Downey Jr. is confirmed to portray the iconic villain, partnered with Benedict Cumberbatch reprising his role as Doctor Strange. The film weaves Doctor Doom, a notorious foe of The Fantastic Four, possibly hinting at alliances with the Avengers in the battle.

Downey is heavily engaged in crafting his character’s depth, a fact Joe Russo alluded to during the Omelette chat. He remarked, “What I cherish about this film is our admiration for villains who perceive themselves as protagonists. They gain depth and intrigue. An actor like Robert necessitates a thoroughly fleshed-out character for audiences to engage with.”

The Russo Brothers also confirmed the runtime of the next installment in the Avengers saga; Doomsday will deliver two-and-a-half hours of action-packed cinema.
