However, change might be on the horizon with the exciting news that the property’s rights are up for grabs, attracting some intriguing potential buyers eager to breathe new life into the franchise.
Deadline reports that Strange Darling director JT Mollner and producer Roy Lee are both keen to get their hands on the Sawyer legacy, adding their unique twist to this blood-soaked saga. If everything falls into line, it could be a perfect pairing, given Mollner’s stellar work in horror storytelling, earning widespread acclaim. This new potential project’s appeal could spike further if Texan star Glen Powell decides to take a closer look at Mollner’s concept.
With a property this renowned, Mollner might face stiff competition from other directors eager to wield the chainsaw themselves. The Hollywood Reporter suggests that IT director Andy Muschietti is also among those rumored to be circling the nightmare at the desolate house.
As of now, the rights belong to Verve, a company holding them since 2017. Their most recent project was a 2022 horror series streamed on Netflix, which attempted a legacy sequel but did not lead to further films. A Deadline interview with a Verve representative reveals, “Verve represents The Texas Chainsaw Massacre estate and aims to develop a multimedia strategy for this iconic horror franchise. Currently, they haven’t officially approached any filmmakers or producers, given the immense value and heat surrounding this iconic horror property, with packages coming to Verve even before formal submissions.”
