After nearly two decades, a dedicated cult horror developer has made a remarkable comeback with a spiritual successor to the game that truly defined their career.
Agustin Cordes rose to fame in the horror game community with his 2006 debut, Scratches. Known for its eerie and methodical mystery, akin to Myst, it was not only unforgettable for its chills but also for being the first commercial adventure game developed in Argentina.
Now, after 19 years, Cordes introduces another chilling point-and-click adventure titled Asylum. Although following a rocky path, this highly anticipated game has finally reached the public.
Asylum was initially unveiled in 2010, marking a return to the horror genre. It promised to enhance the signature mystery elements while offering a full 360-degree camera control, staying true to its roots. With a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2013, Senscape managed to raise almost $120,000. So, what caused the delay?
According to a Kickstarter FAQ, the game was developed “on a shoestring budget,” with funds coming directly “from our own pocket.” The small team worked in sporadic shifts, complicating their schedule. Furthermore, Asylum is three times larger than Scratches, boasting over 100 rooms and a meticulously designed structure.
The developers highlighted the challenges they faced, stating, “As if all this craziness wasn’t enough, we’ve been developing our own game engine. From scratch.” They humorously added, “Ever hear when developers prefer to stick with pre-made engines? Well, there’s a good reason for that.” When asked if they were insane, the response was, “Just a little bit.”
On Steam, Senscape describes Asylum as being “inspired by H. P. Lovecraft, Hammer Films and twisted Euro Horror from the 80s.” Players will explore the complex institute, encountering its bizarre residents while confronting unsettling visions.
