Like the titular weapon of choice, Hollywood has relentlessly cut through the legacy of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with results varying in success. Many fans fondly remember the stellar 2003 remake. However, a thrilling change might be on the horizon, as the rights to this chilling franchise are now up for sale, drawing attention from some fascinating names eager to breathe new life into it.

According to a report from Deadline, Strange Darling director JT Mollner and producer Roy Lee have their sights set on the IP, eager to infuse the Sawyer legacy with their unique, blood-soaked vision. Their collaboration seems promising, considering Mollner’s previous work captivated audiences with its dark storytelling. Adding to the excitement, Texas-born star Glen Powell has shown interest in exploring Mollner’s concept.

Unsurprisingly, a renowned property like this has Mollner potentially up against stiff competition. The Hollywood Reporter mentions that Andy Muschietti, famed for his direction of IT, is also casting a curious eye over the infamous chain-link-adorned house.

Currently owned by Verve, the rights to the franchise have been under their stewardship since 2017. Their latest venture was a 2022 horror series on Netflix, though it struggled to generate further installments. In a conversation with Deadline, a Verve representative commented, “Verve represents The Texas Chainsaw Massacre estate and is crafting a multimedia approach for this iconic horror series. We have not formally offered the rights to any filmmakers, producers, or buyers because of its high demand, leading to preemptive proposals approaching Verve.”

As of now, the horror world watches and waits to see who emerges victorious in the bid to take on Leatherface. For horror enthusiasts looking for other spine-chilling remakes, here’s a curated list of ones that are so well-crafted it’s terrifying.
