Much like its iconic weapon, Hollywood has persistently carved through the legacy of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. While the outcomes haven’t always been fruitful, the 2003 remake stands out as a notable exception. However, a thrilling turn of events might be set to change all that, with the rights to this storied franchise now on the market and some intriguing names showing interest in reviving it.

According to Deadline, Strange Darling director JT Mollner and producer Roy Lee are eager to acquire the Sawyer legacy, eager to infuse their own unique, blood-tinged vision into the series. Given Mollner’s knack for crafting twisted murder tales that have garnered high praise, this pairing could be a cinematic dream come true. Adding more excitement, Texas-native star Glen Powell might lend his keen eye to Mollner’s project.

Naturally, with such a prestigious property, Mollner is likely to face stiff competition from other filmmakers who are eager to wield the chainsaw themselves. News from The Hollywood Reporter reveals that IT director Andy Muschietti is also circling the infamous house at the heart of the franchise.

The rights are currently held by Verve, a company that has been the custodian since 2017. Their most recent venture involved a 2022 horror series on Netflix, a legacy sequel that unfortunately didn’t set the groundwork for more installments. In a statement to Deadline, a representative from Verve shared, “Verve represents the Texas Chainsaw Massacre estate and is formulating a multimedia strategy for this seminal horror franchise. Although the property hasn’t been officially presented to filmmakers, producers, or buyers yet, its iconic status ensures packages are already being preemptively pitched to Verve.”

For now, we’ll have to wait and watch who will emerge victorious in the bid to control the fearsome Leatherface and what remnants will linger. Meanwhile, if you’re curious about horror remakes, explore this list of remakes that are not just good but downright terrifying.
