The finale of Severance‘s second season delivered a stunning blend of blood, choreography, and unexpected joy, leaving audiences and even the show’s stars, like Britt Lower, in shock. In the closing scenes, Mark S. played by Adam Scott, teetered on the brink of a life-changing decision as he prepared to escape behind Gemma (portrayed by Dichen Lachman), who was presumed dead by Mark for two years. However, an unexpected call from Helly pulled him back, leaving Gemma isolated in a world unfamiliar after such a long absence. While Mark’s retreat to the severed floor seemingly revolves around his feelings for his team’s latest ally, Lower suspects there might be deeper motivations at play.
In an insightful discussion with Vanity Fair, Lower posed a piercing question echoing throughout the season for all of MDR’s members: “Do the innies’ lives matter—including all of the people at O&D, all of the goat people, all of the innie marching band members, which Helly has just discovered exist?” By venturing beyond their office confines into various departments, it underscores the multitude of lives within Lumon that could face obliteration. “Mark’s decision to cross that threshold might unravel the entire severance program, consequently erasing the innies’ consciousnesses as they know it.”
In this newly inverted scenario, Gemma will require all possible support in her quest to reclaim Mark, notwithstanding the potential fallout for the Innies. Lower is thrilled by the prospect of partnerships blossoming in the upcoming third season, which recently received its official approval. “I’m genuinely excited for Gemma and Devon to rekindle their friendship. Their bond in episode seven resonated deeply with me, although I didn’t feature in those scenes,” Lower shared heartfully. “Seeing their mutual affection only deepened my appreciation of their relationship.”
