The past few years have been a thrilling ride for dream ports. We’ve witnessed Xbox games making appearances on the PS5, with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle capturing our imaginations, and there’s buzz about Starfield and Gears of War following suit. But when the official channels don’t come through, fans often step up to the plate, just like with the Sonic Unleashed PC port. Now, fans have gifted us with something truly special: Assassin’s Creed Shadows running on the Nintendo 3DS.

Indeed, the dream has been realized as Twitter user @BobWulff showcased images and videos of Ubisoft’s latest adventure running impressively on the Nintendo 3DS. Astonishingly, it performs quite well; the New Nintendo 3DS XL features nearly all the necessary buttons for the game, save for the L3 and R3 buttons, which have ingeniously been reassigned to the touch screen.

Unlike the miraculous ports such as The Witcher 3 on the Nintendo Switch, this achievement stems from the 3DS’ vibrant homebrew scene. Innovators have developed methods to utilize Sunshine/Moonlight game streaming on the handheld. Moonlight is a community-driven, open-source version of Nvidia’s GameStream protocol, once employed on Nvidia Shield devices, complemented by Sunshine, a supporting host program.

Though Nvidia’s official version was discontinued years ago, the open-source alternative remains a favorite for PC streaming. Moonlight is available on other platforms like Android, iOS, and PCs. Thanks to the dedicated community, we now see adaptations for Xbox Series X|S, PS Vita, Nintendo Switch, and even the Wii U. The 3DS adaptation functions remarkably well, offering a unique way to enjoy the latest AAA games at a charming 240p resolution.

Meanwhile, a passionate Dreamcast enthusiast is hard at work on a GTA 3 version for the Dreamcast, a testament to creativity even though it won’t revitalize Sega’s classic console. It’s a fascinating endeavor nonetheless.

Expect fresh stories, community highlights, and more in weekly updates from the scenes you cherish most.
