The cast lineup for the new Harry Potter series by HBO is expanding significantly. Comedy veteran Nick Frost is poised to enchant audiences by stepping into the shoes of the beloved Hogwarts caretaker Hagrid in this fresh adaptation.

According to Deadline, negotiations are nearly wrapped up for Frost to join the esteemed school of witchcraft and wizardry. He joins a growing roster of talent that includes John Lithgow as Professor Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu taking on the role of Professor Snape.

Frost, renowned for his comedic genius alongside Simon Pegg, rose to fame in the mid-2000s with iconic roles in films like Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End. These films, helmed by Edgar Wright, are collectively known as the Cornetto Trilogy, showcasing Frost and Pegg’s dynamic range.

His filmography extends beyond these classics, with notable roles in The Adventures of Tintin, The Huntsman series, and Fighting With My Family, among others. Frost will soon grace the screen once more in the upcoming How to Train Your Dragon live-action film, which is set for release on June 13, 2025.

Set as a multi-year project, the new Harry Potter series aims to adapt all seven books, chronicling Harry’s years at Hogwarts. Produced by HBO for Max, it promises accessibility to a British audience through Sky.

This adaptation presents a stark contrast to the original Harry Potter films, which prominently featured British actors like Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. The series opts for a more diverse talent pool, incorporating American actors, among others.

Steering the creative vision is Francesca Gardiner, known for successful projects like Succession and His Dark Materials. With Mark Mylod as director and executive producer, the journey is just beginning, though a release timeline hasn’t been announced yet.

The forthcoming series has not been without its controversies, particularly surrounding the show’s executive producer, J.K. Rowling, due to her public comments on gender identity. For more on similar issues, you could explore the Hogwarts Legacy controversy.
