Crystal Dynamics, known for its pivotal role in crafting Perfect Dark and an untitled Tomb Raider project, has announced another wave of layoffs impacting 17 staff members.

In a statement shared via social media this morning, Crystal Dynamics expressed, “This morning, Crystal Dynamics made the difficult decision to reduce our workforce by 17 talented team members.” The studio emphasized that this choice was essential for aligning with their present business objectives and ensuring future prosperity. They stressed that these layoffs did not reflect the dedication or competence of the exiting employees, and assured support through transition packages and outreach opportunities.

Embracer Group, the parent company, had already initiated massive layoffs, and Crystal Dynamics previously let go of nine members from branding and marketing alongside an IT team member in 2023. This new decision doesn’t affect their ongoing project plans.

Although their recent involvement included the Tomb Raider remasters, the studio’s last major endeavor was Marvel’s Avengers in 2020, a project that didn’t meet commercial expectations as stated by former owner Square Enix. Following its acquisition by Embracer Group in 2022, Crystal Dynamics has been collaborating with The Initiative at Xbox on Perfect Dark, and they are developing a Tomb Raider game set to be published by Amazon.

Despite assurances from Amazon’s gaming director last year regarding their relative stability amidst Embracer’s turmoil, the cumulative layoffs, though smaller compared to the vast industry cuts, suggest limited reprieve from broader challenges. Explore five iconic Tomb Raider games.
