Andor season 2 is arriving soon, promising a compelling and grounded political narrative set in the iconic galaxy. Despite the Star Wars franchise’s traditional hesitation to experiment with genre as much as Marvel, Tony Gilroy, the creative mind behind Andor, sees potential for innovation.
In a recent interview in SFX magazine, Gilroy expresses his ambition, saying, “I think we’ve made our lane with Andor, and Skeleton Crew was trying to do their own, too.” The issue, featuring Black Mirror Season 7, hits stands on Wednesday, March 26.
Gilroy continues, “The hope is that you can do anything. We’re going to introduce some canonical concepts in Andor that might spark new ideas.” He envisions a future where a horror film or a sitcom could exist within the Star Wars universe: “I always fantasized that the show would break new ground, that someone could create a three-camera sitcom or a horror movie set in Star Wars.”
Gilroy recalls his initial conversation with Kathy Kennedy, Lucasfilm president, where he suggested, “Could you do a courtroom drama? Why not? We’ve crafted our unique space with Andor, and now it’s up to others to discover novel approaches.”
