Craig Mazin, the ingenious showrunner of The Last of Us, teases fans with the promise of encountering some of the most terrifying forms of infected in the upcoming season. “I think we can say that we are dedicated to the idea that just as humanity is progressing and [Jackson] is getting bigger and they’re bringing people in, the infected are also evolving,” Mazin shared with GamesRadar+. “So we’ll certainly see quite a few changes along the way to impress upon our characters. Oh, do you think you’ve figured it out, you think you’re good at handling the infected?” He hints at the presence of new dangers, particularly the infamous Rat King, a name that sends shivers down the spines of those familiar with The Last of Us Part 2.

Mazin continues, “All I’ll say is I don’t understand how you could make a show called The Last of Us and not eventually get where it ought to go. When and how, we’ll keep that a mystery.” This leaves us speculating on what other surprises season 2 holds.

In the debut season—beware, spoiler alert—we encountered a Bloater in episode 5, an experience unsettling enough already. For those less familiar with the games, there are multiple infected types: Stalkers, which lurk and ambush players, Shamblers that exude pus, and the dreaded Rat King.

The Rat King is a formidable boss in TLOU Part 2, notorious for its terrifying nature. It’s none other than Abby who battles this horror, and viewers eagerly anticipate if Kaitlyn Dever will confront it this season.

The excitement around The Last of Us Season 2 grows as it approaches its release on HBO and Max on April 13. Stay tuned, and don’t forget to explore our selection of the best shows and movies available on Max.
