AI Limit, released alongside The First Berserker: Khazan this week, takes inspiration from notable FromSoftware titles in its combat mechanics. Despite this, the developers prefer to categorize it as an action RPG, setting it apart from the likes of Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3.
During a conversation with GamesRadar+ at this year’s Game Developers Conference, AI Limit producer Yang Bin didn’t dismiss the Soulslike label entirely, yet he expressed that it’s not his preferred term. “In terms of combat, AI Limit is indeed a Soulslike game, inheriting many characteristics from this genre, especially those found in Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3,” Bin stated. “Nevertheless, we encourage players to see beyond these features. AI Limit introduces unique elements like the Sync Rate system, a Cel-render art style, and a post-apocalyptic wasteland setting, which transcend the standard ‘Soulslike’ classification. We would rather identify AI Limit as an action RPG.”
Sense Games, the studio behind AI Limit, is justified in choosing how to classify its creations. As Bin suggests, AI Limit’s innovative Sync Rate system offers a fresh approach to action-RPG combat. This system tracks a gauge that fills as players deal damage and depletes upon receiving damage, a dynamic feature that sets it apart from traditional formulas. Even if the anime-inspired visuals and post-apocalyptic themes do not fully distinguish AI Limit from other Soulslike games, its combat is certainly original.
