The much-anticipated Heat 2 is inching closer to reality. Since its inception in April 2023, excitement has been brewing around this project. Recently, director Michael Mann confirmed that he has completed the first draft of the script.

In a revealing conversation with Vulture, Mann stated, “I just finished the screenplay and handed in the first draft.” He added, “In this case, it was Warner Brothers. Any more than that, I can’t talk about. But it’s an exciting project.”

While the official cast remains unannounced, rumors are swirling with speculation. There’s buzz that Adam Driver might step into the shoes of career thief Neil McCauley, a role originally portrayed by Robert De Niro. Meanwhile, Austin Butler is rumored to play Chris Shiherlis, originally depicted by Val Kilmer.

The upcoming film draws inspiration from the novel Mann co-authored with Meg Gardiner, released in 2022. This narrative doubles as both a prequel and sequel to the iconic 1995 crime drama, where the infamous chase between McCauley and Al Pacino‘s LAPD detective Vincent Hanna unfolds. The novel weaves together two timelines, exploring the protagonists’ fates before and after the events of Heat.

Sharing his enthusiasm, Mann expressed to GamesRadar+ in 2023, “It was a thrill to write it, because I got to go off on some tangents that you would never be able to do when making a motion picture.”
