The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann, along with TV series showrunner Craig Mazin, recently shared their thoughts on Joel’s controversial decision at the conclusion of the first installment. Both expressed that, if they were in Joel’s shoes, they might have acted in the same manner. Read their interview on IGN.
In narratives involving a zombie apocalypse, characters often face moral dilemmas, whether stealing essentials from others or eliminating infected friends to prevent transformation. The Last of Us follows this narrative, with characters Joel and Ellie confronting numerous tough choices. The most significant being Joel’s decision at the climax of the first game. Quick spoiler alert: These events significantly impact the storyline of both the games and their TV adaptation, potentially spoiling future seasons.
At the game’s ending, Ellie is prepped for surgery that could discover a cure for the devastating cordyceps outbreak but at the cost of her life. Joel, discovering this truth, embarks on a violent mission to save her, annihilating everyone in the hospital. Since the game’s 2013 debut, fans have fervently debated Joel’s choice. Now, both series showrunners, Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, have shared their perspectives.
In a candid discussion with IGN, Druckmann declared, “I believe Joel was right… In such a scenario, I’d hope to act with Joel’s resolve to protect my daughter.” Although Mazin and Druckmann may have had nuanced discussions around this, Mazin conceded, “In Joel’s predicament, I’d likely have mirrored his actions,” yet reflecting some reservation, he noted, “I’d like to believe I wouldn’t. That’s the fascinating tension in moral decisions.”
The repercussions of Joel’s actions only unfolded with the release of The Last of Us Part 2, seven years later, revealing that the doctor he killed was Abby’s father. Abby, driven by vengeance, shapes the sequel with her quest for retribution, even learning golf en route. Explore the story of Part 2 on PlayStation. While Druckmann doesn’t outright condemn Joel, his response acknowledges the ambiguity surrounding the decision.
Discussing the prospect of a *The Last of Us Part 3*, Druckmann hinted, “so many stars need to align, I can’t assure it.” For those deeply invested in these narratives, the anticipation builds. Stay updated with Naughty Dog for more news.
