The beloved Minecraft game first captured imaginations over 15 years ago. This April, as the new film adaptation A Minecraft Movie hits theaters, many young adults will revisit the pixelated world they cherished in childhood. Joining the audience in this nostalgic journey are stars Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, and director Jared Hess.
“There’s a lot of my inner child in this movie,” shared Black with GamesRadar+. “It’s that sense of play and creative freedom, guiding me from a young age and still today when I’m at my peak.” Reconnecting with their youthful selves is a theme Brooks echoes, who portrays Dawn, a newcomer to the Minecraft realm. “100%, I let my inner child lead this movie,” Brooks remarked. “She spoke, improvised, and laughed for me, reconnecting me to my playful side amidst serious roles.”
Although A Minecraft Movie boasts a PG rating, catering to children and Minecraft fans alike, its universal appeal suits all ages. Director Hess, who discovered the game through his kids, emphasized the importance of maintaining a child’s perspective. “Everyone on the team is a big kid at heart,” stated Hess. “We wanted to capture and experience the game through a child’s eyes as we adapted our favorite elements for the screen.”
The film follows Henry (Sebastian Hansen), his sister Natalie (Emma Myers), Garret the Garbage Man (Jason Momoa), and Dawn (Brooks) as they tumble into the Overworld, an intriguing cubic universe. Their survival hinges on in-game hero Steve, portrayed by Black, the iconic figure from the beloved game.
