All-New Venom introduced four potential candidates to bond with Venom: Robbie Robertson, Rick Jones, Madame Masque, and Luke Cage. Yet, none were chosen. Instead, the surprising host is Mary Jane Watson.

For fans of writer Al Ewing and artist Carlos Gómez, this revelation isn’t shocking. Subtle hints across the initial four issues pointed towards Mary Jane’s transformation into Venom.

The revelation occurs in All-New Venom #5, setting up the backstory for her symbiotic connection, unveiled in the following issue. Keen readers can glimpse an early page from #5, alongside the main cover by Adam Kubert and a surprise variant featuring Mary Jane as Venom by Martín Cóccolo and Clayton Crain, not to mention Lucas Werneck‘s variant for #6. The interior page doubles as a variant for the second printing of issue #5.

As Al Ewing remarks, “We hooked readers in with the big mystery…but now the cat’s out of the bag, we can really dive into the unlikely interaction of MJ and Venom. Unlike previous hosts, these two aren’t together by choice, but their odd-couple energy offers plenty of old-school soap opera thrills.” Ewing promises that there is much more to anticipate, including some darker twists, for those engrossed by this lighter Venom iteration.

Being Peter Parker’s ex-wife, Mary Jane’s role as Venom is bound to further complicate matters in their complex history—a dynamic that fans have passionately followed for nearly two decades. This unexpected chapter is sure to intrigue and perhaps unsettle those hoping for a reunion.

All-New Venom #5 hits shelves on April 2, with #6 following on May 7. Don’t miss out on discovering the best Venom comics.
