The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin has made it clear that the series will remain faithful to the original video game narrative. Unlike what happened with Game of Thrones, which extended beyond George R.R. Martin’s novels, Mazin emphasizes, “I am not going to go past the game.” He insists there’s no intention to diverge from the source material, unabashedly stating, “I’m basically setting a decade of my rapidly dwindling life on fire to tell this story. The show is so hard to make. It has to have an end.”

The adaptation, based on The Last of Us video game franchise, is already eyeing seasons 2 and possibly 3 and 4 to aptly depict the second game. Both of the games provide succinct and interconnected stories without the addition of prequels or spin-offs. There seems to be no foreseeable release of Last of Us Part 3, leaving Mazin and co-showrunner Neil Druckmann without extra material to adapt for television.

As Mazin ponders the show’s future, he muses, “Who knows, there might be a Dunk and Egg The Last of Us show that happens that somebody does. But for me, the only question is: Is it going to be one more season or will it require two more?” His approach remains flexible, contingent upon whether the story’s demands can be satisfied in a single season or necessitate a split into two for a comprehensive finale.

Anticipation builds for The Last of Us season 2, scheduled to debut on HBO and Max on April 13. UK audiences can look forward to experiencing it on Sky Atlantic and NOW.
