On Nintendo’s Japanese Twitter account, a post about the upcoming sequel to Tomodachi Life captured the hearts of fans even more fervently than the much-anticipated announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2.

Last week’s Nintendo Direct turned heads with a somewhat unconventional lineup. As the final showcase dedicated to the original Nintendo Switch, we eagerly await the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct this coming week. While there were notable reveals such as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the focus leaned heavily towards unexpected titles. From surprising revivals by Bandai Namco of PlayStation’s Japan Studio games to the show-stopper announcement of a new Rhythm Heaven game—let’s just say, it ended with a bang!

Still, it was not only Rhythm Heaven that saw a triumphant return. Fans were thrilled by the revelation of a sequel to the quirky 2014 Nintendo 3DS game, Tomodachi Life, aptly titled Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. With the original game fetching high prices after the discontinuation of the 3DS eShop, the timing couldn’t be better. Despite its importance, Nintendo deemed it a crowning moment, placing it in a prime game slot, yet in Japan, its reception surpassed even the Nintendo Switch 2 frenzy.

According to YouTuber BoTalksGames (via VGC), Nintendo’s tweet introducing Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream received over 400,000 likes. This staggering number overshadows the 385,000 likes garnered by the Nintendo Switch 2’s announcement, clearly highlighting the anticipation that has surrounded this peculiar series.

Though Tomodachi Life only made its way West in 2014, the series began in Japan with 2009’s Tomodachi Collection. It amassed a notable online presence with the 3DS release, as players shared amusing Mii character antics. A fan-favorite feature is the delightful text-to-speech dialogue, which shines most in the musical mode, creating memorable performances like the love song spin-off of The Dark Knight Rises‘ opening scene and various NSFW Mii songs over the years.

In Nintendo’s defense, the Nintendo Today app did unveil the Legend of Zelda movie release date, exciting news for many. Additionally, an actor from Final Fantasy 7 Remake expressed a keen interest in participating in the project.
