Two former Nintendo marketing experts believe the triumph of major AAA games like Baldur’s Gate 3, Elden Ring, and Cyberpunk 2077 on the Steam Deck has laid the groundwork for their potential success on the Switch 2.
In a new episode of the Kit & Krysta podcast, hosted by Nintendo veterans Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang, they delve into why they’re optimistic about a robust AAA presence on the Switch 2. The crux of their discussion lies in the massive success of the Switch compared to its predecessor, the Wii U. They also highlight the strong sales of technically demanding AAA titles on the Steam Deck as a sign of a viable market for scaled-down versions on portable devices.
“Many major studios gained valuable experience and positive feedback by adapting their games for the Steam Deck,” Ellis explains, “which is slightly less powerful compared to high-end PCs generally expected to run their games. The developers realized that a huge audience is eager to play versions that may be dialed down to fit a more portable platform.”
Sports games like FIFA are also excellent candidates for adaptation. Ellis mentions titles like Baldur’s Gate 3, Elden Ring, and Cyberpunk 2077 as leading examples, adding, “It’s reasonable to assume, if it can operate on a Steam Deck, it likely can run on the Switch 2 as well.”
So far, Nintendo has remained reserved about the Switch 2’s software library since its formal announcement. However, expectations are set to change with the upcoming April Switch 2 Direct event. Currently, we know a new Mario Kart game is coming to the successor, but much still relies on speculation and rumors.
