The biggest surprise from today’s Nintendo Switch 2 Direct was the long-awaited announcement of Donkey Kong Bananza, a new addition to the beloved franchise.
This game bursts with vibrant colors, offering a fresh and lively visual twist to the series. Notably, the titular gorilla flaunts a new, albeit controversial design. Despite opinions on DK’s new look, the platforming dynamics are simply impressive.
Players will see Donkey Kong sprinting across expansive environments with the freedom to climb and dig, reminiscent of a Minecraft-like experience. According to Switch 2 producer Kouchi Kawamoto in an official interview, the power of the new console lets you “experience the exhilaration of being able to destroy anything you want in the game without restrictions.”
The game looks stunning and noteworthy, especially since it’s been decades since DK’s sole previous 3D adventure in Donkey Kong 64, which debuted in 1999. After a long dry spell for games featuring the character who helped launch Nintendo’s gaming legacy, his return on Switch 2 in such a significant role is thrilling.
Mark your calendars for July 17 when Donkey Kong Bananza launches on Switch 2. It’s just one of several exciting titles that have been detailed during today’s reveals, and it seems the new console aims for a robust software lineup in its initial year.
Notably, Nintendo Switch 2 Direct also unveiled Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, a Legend of Zelda spin-off occurring before Tears of the Kingdom.
