The Nintendo Switch 2 Direct has unveiled exciting news about the upcoming system, and a standout detail for Japanese consumers is the introduction of a Japanese-language only version. This variant is set to retail for approximately $110 less than its United States counterpart.

Residents of Japan are in luck, as they can purchase a Switch 2 that exclusively supports the Japanese language for around $340. In contrast, the multilingual model is priced at about $480. In the United States, the cost is set at $450, although this may fluctuate due to impending US tariffs on products sourced from Vietnam and Cambodia.

Attention was drawn by a Twitter user to Nintendo’s strategic decision to transfer Switch 2 production from China to Vietnam and Cambodia in an attempt to sidestep hefty tariffs. Ironically, the tariffs on these nations now exceed those imposed on China, with Vietnam facing a 46% surcharge, Cambodia 49%, and China 34%. Meanwhile, Japan’s goods encounter a 24% tariff.

According to industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, these tariffs are a likely explanation for the $449 pricing rather than a more consumer-friendly figure: “Likely why it was already $449 instead of a lower price.” The substantial tariff increase was further highlighted in a recent announcement foreseeing potential global price impacts for the Switch 2.

The original Switch debuted at $300; hence, the new pricing reflects a significant 50% hike, which aligns with the tariff changes. Alternatively, it could be due to the enhanced production costs, as the Switch 2 boasts the capability to run intensive titles like Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077. The system also introduces new features such as built-in microphones and screen sharing via the innovative C button.

Although enticing, purchasing the Japanese-only version comes with the caveat that it exclusively accepts Nintendo accounts designated to the Japan region, potentially thwarting scalpers. Pre-orders remain available across various markets for eager consumers to secure their devices.
