Nintendo has announced a delay for the Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders in the United States. Contrary to previous plans, pre-orders won’t kick off next week. This delay is due to the company’s decision to ‘assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions.’
In an official statement shared by GameSpot’s Tamoor Hussain on Twitter, Nintendo elaborates: ‘Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025, as initially planned, to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Updates on timing will be provided in due course. The launch date of June 5, 2025 remains unchanged.’
This announcement followed the recent Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, which generated plenty of excitement around the new hardware and its upcoming Switch 2 games. This delay is, understandably, disappointing for US fans eager to secure their console. While it’s uncertain how long this setback will last, Walmart’s pre-order page now simply reads ‘pre-orders coming soon.’ Similar messages can be found on Best Buy and GameStop, indicating widespread adjustments among major retailers.
On the very day the Switch 2 was revealed, US President Donald Trump introduced new tariffs. Experts suggest these tariffs may influence the console’s price in the US, potentially explaining why the price wasn’t disclosed during the Direct.
Many fans are already pleading with Nintendo to ‘drop the price’ of the console. Hopefully, Nintendo’s assessment of ‘evolving market conditions’ will help mitigate any adverse effects on future pricing. While the June 5 launch date remains set, the uncertainty concerning when US fans can secure a unit is undoubtedly causing unease.
Insiders claim that Nintendo might be in a state of surprise, possibly scrambling with a ‘war room’ approach to address the feedback about Switch 2 pricing. Stay updated with GamesRadar+ for more on this developing story.
