FromSoftware’s exciting Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods, takes a different approach from Dark Souls when it comes to character creation. Instead of creating a custom character, players choose and personalize a selection of pre-made characters, much like those in Elden Ring Nightreign.

In a recent Creator’s Voice blog, director Hidetaka Miyazaki shared insights on this new style. He explained that players have the option to select from “over a dozen characters,” each uniquely identifiable by their appearance and individuality. Among these, standout characters like the Rocketeer-esque jetpack man can be glimpsed in the game’s reveal trailer.

Miyazaki expressed, “I think there are a lot of unique elements to the character designs and the weapons they use, so hopefully players can find one or two favorites among them.” He added that while you can’t completely overhaul their facial features or buildcraft as in Dark Souls, you can “customize all sorts of things, from their abilities, appearance, and inner characteristic to the role they play in the world and relationships with other characters.”

This last feature is particularly fascinating. The Duskbloods supports PvPvE for up to eight players, providing roles that introduce personal objectives alongside collective goals to ‘win’ matches. Consider the ‘Destined Rivals’ role, which challenges players to locate a specified rival on the map, or the ‘Destined Companion’ role, where the aim is to find an assigned ally instead. These roles can be customized through ‘blood customization’, enhancing role-play and the dramatic action of each match.

If multiplayer isn’t your preferred choice, there’s no need to worry. FromSoftware’s head Hidetaka Miyazaki reassures fans, saying that they still plan to produce games with a single-player focus, even as The Duskbloods follows in the footsteps of Elden Ring Nightreign with its multiplayer experience.
