Bungie’s forthcoming sci-fi extraction shooter, Marathon, isn’t designed to replace Destiny. In fact, its director candidly shares that Destiny players who are more inclined toward Player vs. Environment (PvE) might not find the game appealing.

In a conversation with GamesRadar+, Marathon’s game director Joe Ziegler elaborates on the process of transitioning players from Destiny. He notes the presence of “some differences” and “some barriers” between the two games that development can mitigate to an extent. However, Ziegler admits, “there’s other things that maybe we can’t, just to be 100% honest.”

Ziegler clarifies, “We don’t expect Marathon to become Destiny 3. Our aim is not to craft a new product that replaces Destiny 2. We believe Destiny 2 has a future, and the team is diligently working to satisfy player needs. But if you’re a fan of Destiny and enjoy PvP sandbox experiences, Marathon could offer something thrilling.”

For Destiny enthusiasts, Ziegler admits, they might experience “a certain advantage” in Marathon since “our weapon systems tend to be somewhat similar,” yet acknowledges “there’s just enough change for you to relearn the curve.”

However, he emphasizes that not all Destiny fans will be captivated by Marathon. “If you’re a Destiny player uninterested in PvP, it’s probably not the game for you due to inevitable PvP interactions,” warns Ziegler. “At some point, a player will confront and engage with you.”

He adds, “If you’re solely seeking PvE experiences, Marathon isn’t your game. We are comfortable saying this isn’t for everyone. If you relish PvP, especially in sandbox environments, then Marathon might be a delight.”

Interestingly, Marathon is steering clear of Helldivers 2’s major blunder, as Bungie assures players that a PlayStation Network (PSN) account won’t be necessary for PC and Xbox.
