Sandfall Interactive, the creative force behind the newly launched turn-based game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has been open about drawing inspiration from legendary JRPGs like several Final Fantasy titles and the Persona series by Atlus. This strategic move seems to have paid off, as the game is now eclipsing some of the genre titans that fueled its creation.

As of the latest update, SteamDB reports that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has attracted over 87,000 simultaneous players on Steam, with numbers still rising as the weekend progresses. This achievement is particularly remarkable for an original title from a newly established developer, especially within a niche that struggled to evolve a few console generations ago.

To provide some perspective, Atlus‘ games on the same platform haven’t achieved such heights, with Persona 3 Reload peaking at 45,000 players. Moreover, Clair Obscur has narrowly surpassed Metaphor: ReFantazio‘s impressive high of 85,961 players.

It’s quite a feat for a debut game from Sandfall Interactive, placing it in the company of industry titans that once served as its benchmarks. The triumph is even more impressive considering the game launched amid the high-profile stealth release of Oblivion Remastered and became available on Game Pass from day one. Despite these challenges, over 500,000 copies were sold within just 24 hours.
