“Yesterday was probably one of the worst days of my life,” Moon Studios co-founder and No Rest for the Wicked director Thomas Mahler expressed on May 2 via Twitter. This reaction followed the release of a problematic update for the action RPG, which many of his followers seemed less upset about than he was. Yet, Mahler hurried to release an extensive set of informal patch notes, which almost rivaled the length of the US Constitution.

On May 1, just the day after Moon Studios introduced its massive The Breach update, Mahler commented on Twitter that they had spent the entire day assessing the situation and tackling various issues. The Breach update included a significant number of UI alterations, new quests, and a Hardcore Mode, alongside 32 pages of fresh content. However, recent Not Recommended reviews on Steam criticized the update, claiming it transformed No Rest for the Wicked into an unappealing Dark Souls clone.

In addressing the criticisms, Mahler mentioned he would outline “some of the changes” planned by Moon Studios. The summary he provided was a hefty 23-point list that tackled major and minor problems like roll invincibility frames and item drops. After releasing this information, Mahler reiterated on May 2 that he wanted “to apologize to everyone out there – We obviously learned our lesson here and will never again make late changes without extensive testing.” He assured that a hotfix would arrive in 55 minutes.

One player sympathetically remarked, “It wasn’t that bad, but I understand,” while another encouraged with, “No worries, Thomas!” Perhaps he could have avoided some stress with these reassurances.

In the midst of this, while Metroidvania enthusiasts express dismay at Ori developer’s decision to continue developing its Souls-like game for another five years, the CEO revealed, “we just had a call with Microsoft a few days ago,” adding, “let’s see what’ll happen.”
