The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is slated to enchant audiences in 2027. Reports from Variety reveal that this new Middle-earth journey, featuring and helmed by the renowned Gollum actor Andy Serkis, is arriving on December 17, 2027. This date harmonizes with the holiday season releases of Peter Jackson’s iconic Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies.
While details remain scarce about Hunt for Gollum, it’s set to illuminate the unseen adventures of Smeagol, bridging the narrative between Frodo’s departure after Bilbo’s birthday celebration and the Fellowship’s arrival at the Mines of Moria. As Philippa Boyens, famed Lord of the Rings writer, shared with Empire, “It’s a specific chunk of incredible untold story, told through the perspective of this incredible creature.”
Former Lord of the Rings actors are excited about possibly returning for this tale. Sir Ian McKellen, known for his role as Gandalf, expressed eager anticipation: “I would love to go back to New Zealand, number one. I also don’t like the idea of anyone else playing [Gandalf].”
Similarly, Viggo Mortensen, famous for portraying Aragorn, is open to reprising his role under the right circumstances. He shared with GQ UK, “I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. It would be silly to do it otherwise.”
The esteemed Peter Jackson, who is producing this new chapter, hinted at the journey’s scope to Deadline: “We really want to explore his backstory and delve into those parts of his journey we didn’t have time to cover in the earlier films.” While the character paths remain uncertain, he assured that the essence will draw from Professor Tolkien’s legacy.
