The creators behind the acclaimed roguelike FPS, Roboquest, are concluding their work on this standout title after nearly a decade. The decision comes because the game was ‘never meant to be’ what we now call a game as service.
Roboquest earned a devoted following since its breakout moment on Steam early access in 2020, gaining further acclaim with its full release in 2023. Despite its success and a slew of updates, developer RyseUp Studios has announced there will be no more updates for the time being.
In a heartfelt developer blog, the team shared, “We’ve been quite silent for the past months… But today’s the day. 2025 marks nearly a decade working on Roboquest, and it also marks the end of the journey for the game. We know many of you would have loved to see more updates, more content, more Roboquest. But that isn’t something we can deliver.”
They continued, “Spending so much time on the same project takes a toll, and no matter how passionate we’ve been about Roboquest, it’s time to explore new horizons. When we first designed the game, it was never intended to be a ‘game as service’. Adding updates just to ‘maintain the game’ was never part of the plan. Despite this, we pushed the limits, adding what we felt were good additions, yet we can’t stretch it any further.”
Roboquest was designed for 25 to 50 hours of play, making it challenging to deliver meaningful content for those who have logged over 1000 hours. The blog adds, “The passion that burned bright began to dim. Fatigue set in, and we realized it was time to turn the page.”
The developers assure fans that the cross-platform multiplayer will remain online. While most of the team is already immersed in a new project, the blog hints at exciting developments ahead, “The VR version will be released by the end of the year, and the PlayStation port drops on May 27. This new adventure has reignited the passion that fueled Roboquest.”
And so, as they turn the page after over 50 billion badbots destroyed, Roboquest’s developers invite players to explore some of the other best roguelikes if they’ve already ventured through Roboquest’s thrilling worlds.
