The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt stands as a monumental triumph across numerous metrics. Not only is it celebrated as one of the most lauded games of its generation, but it has also achieved remarkable commercial success, with over 60 million copies sold, surpassing Super Mario Bros. on the all-time sales chart.

Despite this, CD Projekt Red is intent on breaking the cycle of replicating the same strategies in its future projects. In a newly released podcast, Joint CEO Adam Badowski reflected on the robust journey of the iconic RPG over the past decade. He remarked, “At the outset of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, we aimed to blend contrasting elements: water and fire.” This philosophy guides the team as they chart their course for upcoming releases.

Addressing future developments by CDPR, Badowski underscored the need for novelty in every new title. “We must introduce elements that shift the status quo,” he stated. “Repeating our past tactics is not an option. Each game must present something fresh.” While he admits that CDPR‘s games do follow a recognizable framework—typically “open world, story-driven, quality” RPGs—he emphasizes that innovation remains a critical pillar for the company.

This vision certainly raises expectations for The Witcher 4, which has featured Ciri as the central character since 2014, and Cyberpunk 2. The latter is set to expand beyond Night City, introducing a new locale described by the original TTRPG’s creator as akin to “Chicago gone wrong.”

The conversation also delved into anecdotes from The Witcher 3’s development, including heated debates over the infamous bathtub scene featuring Geralt. Meanwhile, some passionate CDPR developers have reportedly become so engrossed in The Witcher 4 that they’ve unintentionally brought its control schemes into other gaming experiences.
