Leslie Benzies, the former Rockstar president and producer of Grand Theft Auto, aims to captivate players with his new studio Build a Rocket Boy‘s first game, MindsEye. The goal? Deliver approximately 20 hours of immersive experience, because after all, who has time for more?
Mirroring the sentiments of Tim Cain, the famed Fallout creator, who recently noted the trend of sprawling 100-hour games, Benzies expressed in a GamesIndustry.biz interview that “filler content in games” isn’t what players are looking for. According to Benzies, “I think people want the meat, and they want the potatoes.” This approach is clearly evident in MindsEye, which aims to be a more streamlined, action-packed alternative to Cyberpunk 2077.
Designed to be completed in “20ish” hours, Benzies believes this duration strikes the right balance for a game. He notes, “What you also find through data is that in big games, people don’t play them all. The majority” – around 60% to 70% – “don’t actually play games to the end.” He advocates for creating content that provides a full experience from start to finish, offering side activities to enrich the game’s universe.
Scheduled for a June 10 release at $60, MindsEye is priced with current economic climates in mind. Benzies acknowledges, “The world’s in a funny place. People are worried about the price of eggs. So value for money, I think people appreciate that when times are difficult.” He believes it’s crucial to deliver great value, especially during challenging times.
