Capcom has finally unveiled the spine-chilling new trailer for Resident Evil 9 at the Summer Game Fest 2025. This comes almost a year after the sequel was teased during Capcom Next Summer 2024, leaving fans eager for more.

The gameplay introduces us to the survival horror journey now known as Resident Evil Requiem. The story follows harried FBI agent Grace Ashcroft as she delves into an eerie investigation of an “unidentified disease.” This gruesome ailment melts faces, as suggested by the chilling black-and-white crime scene photos displayed on her computer. Her mission includes examining a mysterious fresh corpse at the very hotel where her mother, Resident Evil Outbreak reporter Alyssa Ashcroft, met her tragic end eight years prior.

Upon reaching the hotel, Grace’s grim expectations are confirmed. She’s captured and hung upside down, much like a butchered hog, while an enigmatic man residing in one of the hotel’s decrepit rooms ominously calls her “the chosen one.” Meanwhile, Raccoon City is shown as a scorched wasteland, crawling with serpentine monsters and tormented souls, adding to the chaos.

This revelation is thrilling, and I feel fortunate, almost divine, to witness it. Special thanks to Resident Evil 7 director Koshi Nakanishi, who guides this installment’s chaotic energy. Can you sense the terror from all those screams?

For avid players like myself, who cherish Resident Evil for its severed limbs and bubbling chaos over mere bullets and blasts, Requiem is a delight from the abyss. Its grim intensity mirrors, if not surpasses, the suffocating dread of 7, setting an ambitious trajectory for the future.

The series confronted criticism with the action-oriented Resident Evil 5 and 6, but the eerie revival of 7 injected a jolt of adrenaline, realigning Resident Evil with its roots. As Nakanishi mentioned during last year’s Capcom summer stream, “figuring out what to do after 7 was tough,” but his inspiration for 9 marked, as he said, “something substantial.”

The scenes showcased at today’s Summer Game Fest are stomach-churning yet electrifying, making me eager to embrace the fear anew. Resident Evil Requiem is set to release on February 27, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Stay updated with the Summer Game Fest schedule for more exciting announcements!
