The Nintendo Switch 2 was poised for a remarkable debut, especially with the release of Mario Kart World, the series’ first installment in over a decade. An analyst has now disclosed that the console has smashed sales records in the US.
According to Bluesky, Circana analyst Mat Piscatella reported that the “Nintendo Switch 2 set a new all-time launch week unit sales record for video game hardware in the US, with over 1.1 million units sold during the week ending June 7, 2025.” Notably, this figure does not include purchases from the My Nintendo Store, suggesting that the actual number might be even greater.
The previous record was held by the PlayStation 4‘s debut. While details on the PS4’s first-week sales in the US are scarce, it is known that about 2.1 million units sold in its first few weeks. In comparison, the Switch 2 achieved 3.5 million sales in just four days.
Regarding game sales, Piscatella mentioned that “79% of US Nintendo Switch 2 buyers also purchased Mario Kart World, either physically or as part of the Mario Kart World Switch 2 hardware bundle.” Since Circana’s data excludes digital sales, the actual attach rate might be even higher. Cyberpunk 2077 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom joined the top three best-sellers during the launch week, although Nintendo has yet to release specific software sales figures.
Nintendo had previously predicted it would sell 15 million Switch 2 units in its first year, a target it is well on its way to achieving after just a few days. The strategy to “strengthen our production” to meet the high demand appears to have been effective.
