As fans eagerly anticipate the arrival of the new Superman film hitting theaters in just a few weeks, exciting news has emerged from the collaboration of Amazon, MGM Studios, and United Artists. The familiar faces of former Jor-El and Kal-El from Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel will reunite, taking on legendary immortal roles in Chad Stahelski‘s upcoming Highlander remake.
Variety has disclosed that Russell Crowe will embrace the mentor role to Henry Cavill’s hero, instructing him in the art of living and fighting with immortality until his head meets its end by another’s sword.
The new film revisits the journey of the 1986 classic, where Christopher Lambert portrayed Connor MacLeod, a 16th-century Scotsman discovering he is one of many around the globe bestowed with immortality. This unique trait draws them into epic life-or-death duels until only one prevail. The original (which boasted a legendary Queen soundtrack) also featured Sean Connery as Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, preparing MacLeod against the fearsome The Kurgan, played by Clancy Brown.
The Highlander project, which floated through development in Hollywood for years, landed with Stahelski in 2016. The John Wick director revealed in May that production is slated to commence later this year, aiming for a release in 2027 or 2028, so stay tuned with latest movie updates.
DCEU followers are sure to relish seeing their former Man of Steel stars reunited on screen, even without their iconic S insignias. The prospect of Crowe possibly wielding a fascinating new accent, as in his recent roles in The Pope’s Exorcist and Kraven the Hunter, adds to the thrill. After all, those immortals have quite the journey.
