James Gunn’s Superman is set to launch a fresh franchise featuring some of DC’s beloved characters, bringing a new face to the iconic Kryptonian, portrayed by David Corenswet. This film introduces the DCU, marking a ‘soft reboot’ that reimagines heroes like Kal-El, Batman, and Wonder Woman while ushering in others for the first time.

Although not a traditional origin story, this Superman film centers on a younger Kal-El who juggles his role as a reporter at The Daily Planet with his heroic escapades. The story also explores his romance with Lois Lane (played by Rachel Brosnahan) and a face-off against Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult).

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not entirely disconnected from the DCEU, spearheaded by Zack Snyder. Some titles remain canon, while others do not—James Gunn and Peter Safran are still clarifying these details. In a Collider interview, Gunn humorously stated that the upcoming titles like Creature Commandos, Supergirl, and Superman reveal canon cues or else ‘fans needn’t bother.’

Peacemaker is straightforward: its first season is canon, aside from the Justice League cameo, which will be addressed in its next season. Meanwhile, Suicide Squad is more ambiguous, serving as a reference point due to Rick Flag Sr.’s vendetta stemming from events involving Peacemaker—a detail reflected in Creature Commandos.

Interestingly, one clue that Superman stands apart from previous cinematic outings is Jason Momoa’s casting as Lobo in Supergirl, distinct from his Aquaman role. Despite these changes, Supergirl and Superman share a connection within the DCU.

Fans eagerly anticipate the casting of Batman and Wonder Woman as Gunn confirmed to Deadline that they will eventually appear with Corenswet’s Superman. However, Matt Reeves’ Batman saga remains separate, so a meeting between Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne and Corenswet’s Clark Kent is unlikely.

Reeves remarked, “It’s all about whether it makes sense.” While focused on The Batman Part 2, Reeves praised Gunn and Safran for supporting his vision, hinting at an epic narrative journey.

Superman arrives in cinemas on July 11. Meanwhile, explore our guide to DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters or discover the best superhero movies of all time.
