There is no superhero as iconic as Superman. Instantly recognizable with his blue suit and red cape, the Man of Steel has graced the big screen numerous times, with portrayals ranging from Christopher Reeve’s timeless classic to Henry Cavill’s intense rendition.
Now, a fresh incarnation is soaring onto the scene as David Corenswet takes up the mantle of Superman in this summer’s highly anticipated film. Meeting with Corenswet in London, we delve into the making of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, exploring how he crafted his unique iteration of the beloved hero.
“There’s something captivating about playing a celebrated character who has been interpreted by outstanding actors before,” Corenswet shares. “It’s like theater, where you can feel a connection through time, drawing inspiration from the same words that inspired those who came before.”
Corenswet highlights, “For me, the focus was on drawing inspiration from All-Star Superman, the comic that James Gunn directed us towards.” He adds, “While not every Superman before me may have read it, I spotted elements in past portrayals that resonated deeply. By reaching into the comics rather than other performances, I felt compelled to create an interpretation that feels unique yet subtly familiar.”
It’s not just Corenswet’s portrayal that stands out; the movie itself promises a fresh experience. “Rather than a mere comic book adaptation to film, as seen with early successes like Iron Man or Batman Begins, this Superman film by James resembles a vivid comic book projected on a giant screen,” Corenswet remarks.
He continues, “I’ve heard it described as akin to the experience of reading a comic, but now it comes alive, allowing audiences to share the journey together. This approach, I believe, paves a fresh path for comic book films and marks a thrilling beginning for a new era of cinema.”
Superman will make its grand debut in theaters on July 11. Meanwhile, you can explore our guides on all upcoming DC movies and TV shows and learn how to watch the DC movies in order for even more entertainment.
