As someone with a petite frame and a heart full of stress, the thought of encountering a stranger in the dead of night typically sounds ominous. However, during PlayStation’s State of Play stream, this very scenario in Ghost of Yotei is described as a clever and beneficial game mechanic.
This sequel to Ghost of Tsushima introduces us to a formidable protagonist, Atsu, who carries her own legacy of strength and historical resentment. She strategically establishes welcoming campsites beneath the stars, patiently waiting for significant characters to emerge and present crucial upgrades and weapons. According to creative director Jason Connell, it’s a game where “the game comes to you.”
At times, Atsu enjoys solitude by the campfire, allowing her to rest, perfect her skills on the elegant shamisen, or savor meals like roasted fish cooked over golden flames. Yet, occasionally, an array of characters appears – from traveling salesmen offering cursed masks to vendors with peculiar upgrades.
The State of Play narrator explains that, “Instead of relying on Ghost of Tsushima’s journal menu, we’ve opted for a character-centric approach to manage allies and vendors you encounter in [the historical Japanese land of] Ezo.” These companions are organized under a “wolf pack” tab in the game. When you hover over their portraits, you receive a concise bio along with any new objectives they bring.
“You can track when a sensei might have a skill weapon for you, or when a vendor offers something exceptional,” says the narrator. “Juggling upgrades and resources in an expansive open-world game can be overwhelming. At campsites, members of your wolf pack can meet you, providing upgrades and one-of-a-kind items. This ensures you’re always ready to enhance Atsu’s quest for vengeance.“
Offering tales from beloved communities and more, Ghost of Yotei emphasizes player autonomy above all, as noted by the developers at Sucker Punch Productions. It encourages exploration and allows various play styles without haste, presenting clues and activities that beckon discovery.
