Zach Cregger, the visionary behind the upcoming Resident Evil movie, wants fans to understand that his cinematic version won’t be “completely obedient to the lore” of the renowned games.

In a feature from the latest issue of SFX magazine, known for profiling Alien: Earth on its cover and hitting shelves on Wednesday, July 16, Cregger doesn’t specify the extent to which his film deviates from the original material. However, he reassures that he doesn’t believe he’s breaking “any major rules.”

Famed for directing the intriguing horror hit Barbarian, Cregger shares, “I am a gigantic Resident Evil game fan. I’ve played them all. I don’t know how many times I’ve just looped [RE4] again and again. I just love it. I’m definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the games.” He elaborates, “I’m aiming to create a narrative that truly captures the essence you experience when playing the games. I don’t think I’m breaking any major rules, but I also recognize that no matter what I do, people are going to come for me online.”

The film, yet to start filming, remains shrouded in secrecy. Cregger teams up with Shay Hatten for the screenplay, with whispers suggesting the plot revolves around a struggling courier tasked with delivering a package to an isolated hospital. During his mission, he gets embroiled in the chaos of a viral apocalypse, facing off against hordes of mutated adversaries. Although Austin Abrams (of Euphoria and Wolfs) is rumored to be involved, his participation hasn’t been confirmed.

If Abrams joins the cast, it will mark his second professional collaboration with Cregger, following their upcoming mystery thriller, Weapons. Featuring Josh Brolin and Julia Garner, this film explores a small-town upheaval caused by the unexplained disappearance of several neighborhood children. The mystery deepens as all missing kids were pupils in a single classroom. Was the teacher involved? Brolin’s grief-stricken father is determined to unravel the truth…

Resident Evil is set to debut on September 18, 2026, while Weapons releases on August 8. Catch more exclusive details in the newest issue of SFX magazine, available on Wednesday, July 16. Look out for the Alien: Earth edition on stands!
