Some individuals can’t seem to tweet without it sparking a news story. Among these notable figures are Hideo Kojima, LocalThunk, and Masahiro Sakurai, a legendary game developer renowned for his work on Kirby and as the director for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Interestingly, he shares a camaraderie with Undertale creator Toby Fox, a friendship that has recently come into the spotlight due to their tweets being excessively analyzed.
When Nintendo announced a Direct event last week, Sakurai retweeted it with a simple word that translates to something akin to “uh-huh” or “I see.” However, according to Automaton, Google and DeepL mistranslated it as “method,” causing fans to go into a frenzy trying to decode its meaning.
Sakurai later addressed the Automaton article, expressing, “I can’t even carelessly tweet…” It must be peculiar to have every online post scrutinized intensely by fans. Toby Fox experiences a similar situation, echoing Sakurai’s sentiments with his own words, “A friend whose tweets are always read too deeply into.” The Google translation reads that way, while DeepL’s translation says, “Friends whose tweets are read in depth every time,” both capturing the same essence.
Sakurai humorously replies, “Maybe… Maybe?” raising the question of whether his tweets deserve such detailed examination. It’s intriguing and endearing to witness their friendship unfold online, especially as Fox expresses his regard for Sakurai as a friend. Incidentally, this also reveals Fox’s interest in Japanese art and culture, evident from the design of Undertale.
Adding to the buzz, Sakurai pointed out his surprise regarding the upcoming Switch 2 Direct being an hour long, admitting that even he is unaware of the event’s content. What could the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct reveal? Fans are eager and excited for announcements, with some hoping for a new Smash Bros. title, despite uncertain probabilities.
