It’s official – fans have scored a major win. Both Grand Theft Auto 3 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City have found their way onto the classic Sega Dreamcast before the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6. The Sega Dreamcast made its debut in Japan back in 1998, yet this hasn’t deterred retro game enthusiasts from bringing cherished titles to this beloved console today.
GTA 3, originally slated for the Dreamcast but later moved to the PlayStation 2, serves as a premier example. Thanks to a highly-skilled group of fans, an “impossible” port is available for play now. But that’s not all; GTA 3 isn’t alone in making the leap to the Dreamcast.
Thanks to the same talented fans responsible for the GTA 3 port, Vice City has now joined the Dreamcast lineup. Developer Falco Girgis, who has been pivotal in both projects, recently revealed the beta version of Vice City on this nostalgic system. “SURPRIIIIIIISE,” exclaimed Girgis in his dramatical reveal post, accompanied by a gameplay video.
The gameplay footage showcases Girgis “raising some hell in the beautiful streets of Miami,” captured directly “from my DC to celebrate.” The performance is impressive, as Girgis notes: “We’ve now introduced graphics settings for 2xFSAA to smooth out those jagged edges, alongside a new video mode for rendering at a 24bpp framebuffer, enhancing the colors’ depth and vividness!”
However, Girgis points out there’s more work ahead. “We still have plenty of work to do regarding features, assets, and performance,” he admits. For those eager to try this port, detailed setup instructions are available on GitLab. Bear in mind that a “LEGALLY EFFING PURCHASED” copy of Vice City for PC is essential for the conversion process to work.
