Glen Powell is stepping into the spotlight in Edgar Wright’s eagerly anticipated remake of The Running Man. However, before diving into this iconic role, Powell was eager to receive the nod of approval from the original 1987 film’s star, the legendary Arnold Schwarzenegger, often fondly referred to as the Austrian Oak.

During a conversation with People, Powell shared his desire to have the predecessor’s blessing, given that Schwarzenegger’s portrayal in the earlier film deviated significantly from Stephen King‘s story. After some help from Arnold’s son, Patrick Schwarzenegger, known for his roles in Gen V and the latest The White Lotus season, Powell and Wright successfully connected with the original Running Man himself. The call was positive, filled with well-wishes for the film’s journey ahead.

Arnold gave us his blessing,” Powell remarked, detailing how he reached out through Patrick, a close friend. Powell hadn’t seen Schwarzenegger since their days filming Expendables in Bulgaria. He added, “We’re planning a special fun gift for Arnold from our movie, and I’m genuinely thrilled for that moment.”

The new adaptation, set to release later this year, pushes beyond the bounds of an American Gladiator-style arena filled with dangerous gadgets and humorous quips. Powell plays Ben Richards, a desperate man hunted for an entire month. His grim quest is driven by a heartbreaking need—securing funds for his ailing daughter’s treatment. The twist? No one has ever completed this deadly run alive, thrusting Richards into a relentless battle for survival. The ordeal is televised, with Bobby Thompson, portrayed by Colman Domingo, as the show’s host. Meanwhile, Josh Brolin takes on the role of Dan Killian, the unfeeling producer who prioritizes ratings and viewer excitement over safety.

The latest trailer, unveiled at CinemaCon, showcased Powell in a gripping combat scene aboard a plane, battling fiercely with pilots amidst the turbulent aircraft. Coupled with intense on-foot chases, it’s apparent that Powell is on track to mirror the agile prowess of Tom Cruise, who famously shared sage advice with him before shooting began.
