The art of adding a creative touch to a beloved tale can transform it into something even more extraordinary. In the case of Solo Leveling, the renowned manhwa depicting Jinwoo’s thrilling adventures, the confrontation with the Ant King, or Beru, received a fresh injection of excitement. This scene has quickly become a highlight among anime enthusiasts. The dynamic portrayal was acknowledged as the series’ most impressive fight thus far. Storyboard Artist, Action Animation Director, Action Director, and Key Animator Yoshihiro Kanno shared on X how the scene’s direction could have unfolded differently without his decision to delve deeper into the intricate battle details, which received more attention than the original material did.
Kanno posted, “This is the original drawing of Beru’s transformation scene in Episode 24 of Solo Leveling. As this marked the pivotal beginning of the second face-off with Jinwoo, I opted for a slightly altered depiction of the transformation compared to the original.” He added, “Every second was crucial, as I aimed to create a lasting impact in a brief period.”
The anime adaptation of Beru’s transformation comes with additional elements that elevate the sequence in ways the manhwa did not. Though the initial version was captivating, Kanno acknowledges that the soundtrack by Hiroyuki Sawano amplified the effect. “I was amazed when Sawano’s divine composition and ominous sound effects were layered in,” Kanno noted, “The atmosphere shifted immediately.” For those looking to enrich their anime journey this year, explore our list of greats set to make waves in 2025.
