As anticipation builds for David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman this year, another project in the DC lineup begins to illuminate the horizon. Lanterns will spotlight space-faring guardians, the Green Lantern Corp, focusing on two of its iconic figures, Hal Jordan (portrayed by Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (played by Aaron Pierre). This upcoming series will delve into their initial meeting, with Jordan already a seasoned ring bearer and Stewart stepping in as the new dynamic addition.
Initially, Lanterns was introduced as DC’s response to True Detective, featuring an odd-couple dynamic tackling interstellar justice that leads them back to Earth. “Regarding tone, it feels grounded and authentic,” shared director James Hawes with The Hollywood Reporter concerning his collaboration with showrunner Chris Mundy. “Although it’s rooted in reality, there’s unexpected humor and gaiety not typically found in True Detective.”
Hawes described it as a “buddy cop” narrative with nuanced story arcs and time travel elements. He praised Chris Mundy for crafting an exceptional series, validating the comparisons to its predecessors.
Currently, as the series continues its development, there’s news of Nathan Fillion reprising his role as Guy Gardener, a tenacious yet cherished part of the GLC, joining the show in due course. With each scene promising unique dynamics, will Lanterns align with its original vision?
Hawes provided more insight, mentioning influences like No Country for Old Men and Fargo, highlighting their essence of Americana. “It’s funny and sharp, offering more humor than you’d find in True Detective,” he elaborated. As we await the Green Lanterns series, explore more about upcoming DC projects here.
