The much-anticipated Andor season 2 has finally arrived, bringing with it a wave of enthusiasm. The latest episodes have been celebrated as another cornerstone for Star Wars on the small screen, marking some of the finest television entertainment this year.
In Andor season 2, we see Diego Luna back as the thief-turned-Rebel spy, Cassian Andor, alongside the return of Ben Mendelsohn as Krennic. Remember, this series is a prequel to Rogue One, so no, they didn’t resurrect Krennic.
Developed by Tony Gilroy, the show debuted in 2022 and swiftly lined up a second season. Initially slated for an August 2024 release, the launch was delayed due to the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes.
Early reviews are hailing the new season as “nothing short of a triumph,” with GamesRadar‘s Fay Watson noting: “[Tony Gilroy] has essentially made four epic films that deepen Cassian’s story in a hugely emotional way. Diego Luna is fantastic, but Genevieve O’Reilly and Ben Mendelsohn steal the show.”
Echoing this sentiment, Germain Lussier from Gizmodo and io9 states: “I cried, I cheered, I laughed, I gasped. It’s smart, sophisticated, propulsive, entertaining, and hugely resonant. Everything you want and more. It’s a miracle.”
Critic Rafael Motamayor asserts that Andor season 2 elevates related works: “This isn’t just the best Star Wars series, but the best TV show I’ve seen all year, period. Utterly riveting, emotionally devastating storytelling. It enhances not just Rogue One, but even Rebels.”
Amon Warmann, a Contributing Editor for Empire, highlights a shift in tempo midway through: “It kicks into another gear entirely with episode 6 and rarely lets up. It sets the standard by which all future Star Wars will be measured. Superb TV.”
