The much-anticipated first major update for REPO is taking longer than initially planned, partly because the developers at semiwork were “surprised” by the overwhelming success of their cooperative horror game.
Launched exclusively on Steam Early Access in February, REPO soared to popularity, reminiscent of titles like Phasmophobia and Lethal Company. The game currently boasts over 112,000 reviews, with 96% being overwhelmingly positive. In a recent Q&A, developer Pontus Sundström quipped, “we slept once and we have been awake ever since.”
Discussing the update, Sundström reiterated that it would “take a bit longer” than initially expected. “We are working tirelessly to deliver this update,” he said. “The sudden success of REPO has brought unexpected administrative tasks and other behind-the-scenes work, extending the time needed for release preparations.”
Another factor causing the delay, as explained in a previous video, is that the team is still honing their development skills. REPO marks semiwork’s second game, following Voidigo, and it’s their first venture into 3D gaming using Unity.
Sundström mentioned, “As we develop the first update for REPO, we’re simultaneously learning and ensuring we adopt the best practices.” Future updates, he assured, would take less time due to this growing expertise. “REPO’s success means navigating through new challenges, but our focus remains on delivering a polished experience,” Sundström added.
Meanwhile, players should be wary of a REPO ripoff named REPO Horror available on the Nintendo eShop. This imitation boldly lists a Switch 2 file size, a dubious claim likely to be addressed by June.
