La Quimera is a science fiction, story-driven first-person shooter that draws comparisons to the legendary Crysis, crafted by former Metro developers now working at a studio called Reburn. With such a noteworthy pedigree, one might expect a sure hit. However, despite being set for release today, the game has encountered an unforeseen postponement due to some harsh reviews.
Reburn’s co-founder and CEO, Dmytro Lymar, addressed the unexpected delay in a heartfelt message shared on the game’s Discord and through a press release. “We’d like to apologize for the unexpected delay in getting La Quimera out to you, our fans and supporters,” he stated. Lymar highlighted the challenges faced by the team: “Our team here at Reburn has been working hard on the game, and it being our first title as an independent game developer has led to some unforeseen challenges. We are trying our best to address the matters as quickly as possible, while also navigating the circumstances we’re faced with here in the Ukraine.”
The announcement lacked specifics regarding the cause or duration of the delay, coinciding with the end of the game’s review embargo. So far, only two critics have reviewed La Quimera – namely XboxEra and Wccftech – each giving it a low score of 4/10. Their critiques include the game’s poor storytelling and surprisingly short length, with one review describing it as “unfinished” and recommending it might have been better as an early access title.
The studio Reburn was previously known as 4A Games Ukraine until rebranding in February. Established in 2014 when the primary 4A Games headquarters relocated to Malta amid geopolitical strife, the remaining Ukrainian developers embarked on their own path, officially becoming an independent entity. Despite its past as a contractor on Metro Exodus, the studio is no longer formally tied to 4A Games, which continues its work on the Metro series.
This complex history potentially contributed to the rebranding of the studio to Reburn, announced alongside the unveiling of La Quimera earlier this year. In a blog post demystifying the relationship between these studios, 4A Games expressed their well wishes: “every success” to Reburn. Here’s hoping that through their continued efforts, the team can honor its promising roots and transform La Quimera into a visual feast that captivates players into a triumphant tale.
