Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has accomplished the impressive feat of revitalizing the classic turn-based combat system, making it feel both fresh and relevant for today’s gaming landscape. Even the seasoned creators at Square Enix, renowned for their JRPG innovations, have taken note.
In a recent and enthusiastic blog post, Square Enix invites fans to evaluate its collection of “brilliant battle systems.” “There are many elements you need for a truly great RPG: a compelling world, memorable characters, or an excellent soundtrack, for example,” writes Square Enix editorial manager Duncan Heaney. “But one of the most important of all is the battle system.”
Continuing the conversation on Twitter, the developer questions, “What’s the best combat system in a Square Enix game? What’s your favorite?” With over 2 million purchases of Expedition 33 recently, Producer and Sandfall Interactive co-founder François Meurisse mentions that the French RPG proudly draws inspiration from classics like “Final Fantasy 10” alongside notable predecessors such as 7, 8, and 9, all hallmarks of Square Enix’s turn-based legacy.
In the past few years, however, Square Enix has shifted away from the turn-based roots of its Final Fantasy franchise. Industry analyst Rhys Elliott remarks to GamesIndustry.biz that the company might be rethinking this strategy, as Expedition 33 delivers exactly what RPG fans have craved.
Timing is everything, and Square Enix’s timely blog post may hint at some competitive pressure or a simple desire to participate in the hot debate around RPG combat systems. Alternatively, this blog post might have been long in planning.
Square Enix still boasts a wealth of iconic games, featuring what Heaney describes as “bombastic battle systems.” Titles such as Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Octopath Traveler 2, and Valkyrie Elysium exemplify this diversity. Meanwhile, Bravely Default stands out as one of the most innovative turn-based games in recent history.
Organized by various combat styles including turn-based, real-time action, and “hybrid” systems similar to Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth, Square Enix’s offerings cater to a vast array of preferences. As per the insights shared by Metaphor: ReFantazio’s battle lead, there’s an inimitable charm inherent to turn-based experiences. “Each one offers a unique experience, so whether you’re looking for all-out action or tense turn-based tactics, there’s something for everyone,” Heaney concludes.
Move over Fortnite Festival—Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on Expert difficulty is secretly the rhythm game I’ve long awaited.
